The article substantiates the necessity of starting a new fundamental historical and lexicographical project — creating a Dictionary of the Ukrainian language of the second half of the 17th – 18th centuries. Such a work will complete the series of synchronous historical dictionaries of the Ukrainian language, describing the state of the lexical system of the Old Ukrainian language (14–18th centuries), and will eliminate the lexicographic lacuna that still exists. Concepts of dictionaries of previous periods are considered primarily in the context of the criteria for the formation of their source base (territorial, genre); the problem of inclusion in the source base of the dictionary of the so-called Old Ukrainian language is updated. heterogeneous sources, the language of which is Church Slavonic Old Ukrainian. One of the controversial problems is also the definition of the upper limit of the dictionary of the second half of the 17th – 18th centuries, namely the inclusion or not of the “Eneida” by I. Kotliarevskyi, which is traditionally associated with the beginning of a new Ukrainian literary language, but which still clearly demonstrates features of the previous period of language development.

Keywords: historical lexicography, lexicographic periodization, Ukrainian language of the  17th – 18th centuries.
