17th – 18th centuries belong to a special epoch in the history of the Ukrainian language. This period is marked by flourishing of polemical literature and active entering of the Ukrainian language into all spheres of public life, including religious. The Church realized the powerful influence of the word on the common people, so there was a need to explain to Ukrainians inapprehensible Bible texts in their native language. It was the impulse for developing of church oratory, because the priest’s homily sounded in the Old Ukrainian language. At this time, Didactic Gospel as written and printed collections of oratory and preaching works become very distributed. Didactic Gospel is a collection of Sunday and holiday conversations with interpretations of the Bible (or sermons, topical preaches, called homilies), which were arranged in a certain order and followed after the reading of Gospel chapters. Written records of the Ukrainian language are an important source of researching the development of the language system and rich illustrative material for historical dictionaries.

The author of the article analyzes the development of the Old Ukrainian language in the religious sphere of the end of 17th century, characterizes the lexical features of Ukrainian homilies collected in the written book of 1670 — Reshetylivka’s Didactic Gospel. The main attention is focused on the group of lexis, which verbalizes the main religious dogmas and concepts — God, the Mother of God, church. The nominations, which represent one concept, but have different lexical realizations and grammatical characteristics, as well as the level of synonymous interchangeability, are determined.
