The article is devoted to analyzing a sermon as a religious genre in the Old Ukrainian language of the second half of the 17th – 18th centuries. This period is marked by active becoming the Ukrainian language into the sphere of religion. The Church realized the powerful influence of the word on the common man, so there was a need to explain people the Bible texts and the main church postulates in their native language. It was the impulse for developing of church oratory, because the priest’s homily sounded in the simple language — the Old Ukrainian language. The new kind of sermons were very widespread and became indispensable part of every church service. They had certain structural and some modification in style. The main recommendations for making sermon were formulated by I. Galyatovskyi in the first course of homiletics — the theoretical treatise “NAÝKA, Albo sposob zlozhenia kazаnia”. This treatise is a part of the collection of sermons “Ключъ разүмѣнїѧ”, which was compiled in 1659 in the Old Ukrainian literary language and printed three times. The homilist oriented preachers to take his homiles as a model. He provided practical guidelines and instructions for preachers of using the printed sermons for composing their own sermons.
The religious style of the Ukrainian language has a complicated way of forming, and the second half of the 17th – 18th centuries is a period marked by the emergence of new genres and establishment of baroque elements and the Old Ukrainian language in some of them. The pragmatic aims, structural peculiarities of homily influenced to other genre types of religious stile.
